PokerStars ran its first PokerStars Players Championship (PSPC) event at the 2019 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas in January. A field of 1,039 players turned out for the inaugural PSPC to ensure it was a roaring success.
Players now have the opportunity to play for life-changing money in a massive rake-free live tournament in 2020 as PokerStars announced the launch of the latest edition of the PSPC during the European Poker Tour Barcelona festival that is running right now.
What is the PSPC?
The PokerStars management team created the PSPC as an exclusive live poker tournament. Its field comprises of elite professional players and PokerStars players of all skill and bankroll levels. Most qualifiers would never have the chance to play in a Super High Roller event.
An eclectic mix of poker players is made possible by PokerStars giving away Platinum Passes throughout the year. These passes are awarded for completing specific tasks and challenges, or by winning specific online and live tournaments. Each Platinum Pass is worth $30,000, which includes the PSPC buy-in, hotel accommodation, and money for travel and expenses.
Grinders from around the world received some 320 Platinum Passes before the inaugural PSPC. Hundreds of professional poker players joined them in what was a $25,000 buy-in Super High Roller. One-hundred and eighty-one players received a slice of the $26,455,500 prize pool, making it the biggest $25,000 event ever.
Marc Rivera of the Philippines qualified for the 2019 PSPC online and finished third for $2,168,000. Spain’s Ramon Colillas won the PSPC for $5,100,000, a monster-sized prize thanks to PokerStars adding $1 million to first-place.
Colillas’ story is reminiscent of Chris Moneymaker’s 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event victory; Collilas later became a member of Team PokerStars on the back of his impressive victory.
PSPC 2020 Details
Details of the 2020 PSPC were revealed during Day 1B of the European Poker Tour Barcelona Main Event. It is not a coincidence this tournament was chosen for the announcement because the 2020 PSPC takes place in Barcelona.
Severin Rasset, Managing Director and Commercial Officer for Pokerstars, said this about the upcoming event.
“The inaugural PSPC was an amazing success and featured hundreds of Platinum Pass winners who dared to dream of playing in an exclusive high-roller event. The PSPC demonstrates our commitment to cultivating and growing the game, not only by creating opportunities for poker fans of all levels to win life-changing sums of money but also by showcasing poker and the entertainment it provides.”
Each Platinum Pass is worth $30,000 just as previous passes were. Included in the pass is the €22,500 PSPC buy-in ($25,000), cash for travel and expenses, and a six-night stay in Barcelona for the winner and a guest. PokerStars is yet to formally reveal full details of how its players can win a Platinum Pass. It has, however, announced a Mystery Chest promotion will award 10 passes.
Dream Come True For Colillas
Colillas had only $10,873 worth of live tournament cashes to his name before his epic victory in the 2019 PSPC. He has travelled the world playing poker since securing the $5.1 million top prize in last year’s event. More than a dozen in-the-money finishes have seen Colillas add $76,361 to his winnings tally.
“The PSPC was an incredible experience for me,” said Colillas when asked about the PSPC concept. “From the lead-up to the tournament to the event itself, and now wearing the PokerStars patch, it has been a dream come true. I’m so happy it’s back again and I get to be a part of an event that could change someone’s life. Although, I am definitely going to attempt a back-to-back!”

The €5,300 buy-in European Poker Tour Barcelona Main Event is the largest in the tour’s history. A field of 1,988 entrants have created a €9,641,800 prize pool divided up among the top 296 finishers. €1,659,000 ($1,834,408) awaits the champion, with that champion crowned in a couple of days.
